*********** The Science of Small Clinical Trials ***********

The Office of Rare Diseases Research at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Office of Orphan Products Development at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), are pleased to announce the 2010 edition of their collaboratively developed course, "The Science of Small Clinical Trials." This is a broad survey course (not a high-level statistical seminar), which is intended to heighten awareness of the methods that exist to design and analyze clinical trials using small numbers of participants. An inescapable necessity when dealing with rare diseases, the use of small trials is also rising in prominence in the context of tissue transplantation, advanced prosthetics, and individualized pharmacogenomics.

The first edition of the course, offered in 2009, was restricted to FDA and NIH staff. The 2010 edition of the course has been revised (based upon comments from 2009 participants), and is now open to ANYONE who wishes to register. The course comprises 7 2-hour lectures, presented at the Lister Hill Center Auditorium on the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD, rom 16 February through 8 March, 2010; the lectures will also be available online via the Internet, live and by delayed on-demand video streaming (using freely available RealPlayer software), allowing anyone with a good Internet connection and appropriate computer to participate (questions from remote attendees will be received via a live text chat room, or via a discussion forum, on a web site dedicated to the course).

ALL participants must register. An optional self-administered open-book, On-line examination will be provided at the end of the course, and individuals who pass this examination will receive a certificate from FDA's Office of Orphan Products Development.

Conocimiento y creencias sobre evaluación en ciencia

Vale la pena destacar que es necesario:

1. Conocer la dimensión del aprendizaje de la ciencia a evaluar: entendimiento conceptual, temas interdisciplinarios, naturaleza de la ciencia, investigación científica y razona-miento práctico.

2. Conocer los métodos de evaluación: pruebas escritas sobre tópicos de naturaleza abierta y cerrada; productos generados por los estudiantes tales como: periódicos, informes escritos del laboratorio, artefactos, modelos desarrollados y materiales multimedia.

Entonces cabe preguntarse:

1. ¿Cómo evalúan el aprendizaje estudiantil en el tema bajo consideración?
2. ¿Cómo  evaluar el propio desempeño en la enseñanza?

Nuevo biosensor que identifica c?lulas inmunes anticancer?genas

P. Beyret muestra c?mo la investigaci?n en Biomedicina se aplica a problemas concretos de salud en humanos. En su art?culo menciona como los investigadores europeos han desarrollado un biosensor de microfluidos, que es capaz de atrapar, de forma aislada, a las c?lulas inmunes junto a c?lulas tumorales individuales, ?ste puede identificar las c?lulas inmunes, o linfocitos, con propiedades antitumorales. Recordemos que s?lo una de cada 1.000 c?lulas inmunes tiene este tipo de propiedades.

Contin?a diciendo que el siguiente paso despu?s de la detecci?n de los linfocitos, que tienen m?s probabilidades de ser efectivos contra el c?ncer, consistir? en identificar las propiedades gen?ticas que probablemente sean responsables de que la c?lula sea activa contra el tumor, con el fin de poder ser utilizado en el desarrollo de nuevos medicamentos contra la enfermedad.

El biosensor, que ha sido dise?ado por Guerrieri, Bocchi y sus colaboradores, ofrece una forma de suministrar limpiamente las c?lulas al chip y despu?s manipularlas.

A pesar que han sido desarrollados dise?os similares, los investigadores se?alan que ninguno es tan f?cil de utilizar como el sistema llamado ?Cell-on-chip biosensor for detection of cell-to-cell interactions?(COCHISE).
